We've had lots of wind here. Might have been something to do with the fact that my wife and 2 kids were all ill though. House smells like the inside of a packet of dry-roasted peanuts now...

Not having seen anything in mag I thought that we should all be aware that our Gov and EU are voting in June to implement or not the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA).
This item will affect all software and internet users !.
It could make many of us and our children CRIMINALS !.
I urge all readers to contact their MEP's to say NO to ACTA !.
More info at www.laquadrature.net/acta.
Very strange you are getting the voice

I use a classic IPod 120GB. I connected the Ipod to my PC, it sees it as a remote drive. I deleted everything off it. My music was backed up in my music file on the PC. Opened Banshee, imported music, then synced ipod. Done.

Now on Ubuntu 12.04, I am using Rhythmebox instead of Banshee (default music player). Done the same and all fine. Apart from Rhythmbox didn't import album artwork, buts thats a different story.

I've had three laptops from there, for myself and family, and have had almost no problems with them (I've had a slight issue with one touchpad not being a synaptics one, but sentelic, and the driver had a few bugs) - I also run Fedora exclusively.

Best of all, they're based in the UK and have a few stores dotted around the UK as well as the usual internet shop.

If I were to say anything bad about them, the laptop housings on some of their own-branded machines feels a little cheap and flimsy, but I fortunately haven't dropped one yet to find out if this is actually the case.

(You can also play on the website and see how much they add on to the prices for Windoze - for example, one PC at £290 with no OS is as much as £690 with Win7 ultimate + office2010!)

Blimey big premium, will check it out , thanks

                                      Hi,
I have recently installed phplist on my home desktop running SuSE. Previously I had it running on PCLinuxOS and it work straight out of the box. No sendmail set up etc.

After setting phplist I tried to send an email to myself. It appeared to be working but no email. I have installed sendmail use YAST and it is running.

Any ideas.

Thanks
OK here's what happened. There's a choice on the "Under the hood" options of Google chrome /chromium where you can allow google apps to run in the background. I have unticked that and now everything is fine!
Hi Les,

The DVD contains Ubuntu 12.04 with the Kubuntu and Xubuntu packages added. We've followed Canonical's recommendations and used the 32 bit version.

We've also included Arch and Scientific Linux - Arch contains both 32 and 62 bit packages, and Scientific Linux is 64 bit.
If the recovery disk you propose to copy is for the new Win7 - does that mean you want the possibility of restoring Win7 to the new netbook?
If that is so, then you need to be clear about things, as some manufacturers use a system involving recovery CDs (sometimes you have to create them when you have the new machine) and a recovery partition - the CDs are useless without the recovery partition.

What I try to do is to save an image of the Windows partition and then I can restore that if I corrupt or otherwise change the HDD content. You also need a note of partition sizes so you can restore the setup.

Install rsync on your desktop, if you haven't done so already, then issue the rsync command using the following syntax:

Code:

rsync [OPTIONS] {source} {destination}

(note: no brackets, these are just to distinguish various parts, read the man page!)
If rsync is installed on the NAS it'll start sync'ing automagically. If not, log in to the NAS and install the appropriate module(s).

Options I use myself are -rdtvu, refer to man page for their influence

I see no reason why you'd want to dual-boot a NAS. As for the swap, given you have enough space, have at least 1x the amount of RAM. Linux thrives on RAM and works mostly in/with the RAM sticks, you'd need enough space for everything if you'd suspend the NAS.

If you can't afford an SSD (and I appreciate students usually have difficulties making ends meet anyway) you may have a spare USB stick and/or SD-card somewhere. This also uses Flash-technology, be it older and therefore seriously slower. However, to maximise the space for data on your disks, as well as separating the OS from your data, you may want to try and have the OS installed on the usb-key/SD-card. Mind that it's quite an advanced subject (but can be done) and you'd still need some space on the HDD for swap and perhaps log- and temporary files (/var/log and /tmp). Also note that read/write cycles have a detrimental effect on the life-span of the device! There are several measures you could take to minimise the effects, Google is your friend!

PS: low-capacity SSD's are now cheap enough to be in the"'birthday-present" category... HINT
