Thank you for your willingness to help me. This is my first forum experience and it was a fearful thing for me.

When the iso downloads completed (both 154 last month and 155 recently) I used the check local data option when torrent finished and did not get any type of errors.

I did indeed run the md5sum on the 154 and 155 iso files, and compared those results to the hash shown on the torrent (I suspected I could be using the wrong items to compare but saw no other options).

After burning the DVDs using brassero, I selected the check disc option from the right-click drop down menu on the LXFDVD icon on the desktop.
This is where I got the file integrity errors.

When the Coverdisc in issue 154 arrived (2-3 weeks after on sale), I was able to run do the exact same check disc procedure but with success. LXFDVD155 has not yet arrived so I cannot confirm the same as 154 but I will test it when it lands in my mailbox.

I did in fact, do 154 over with the exact results noted.

How then to find the difference between DVD 155 when it arrives? Unfortunately, I got mad at 154 and deleted the iso and shredded the DVD before I worked up the courage to ask for help.

Again, much appreciation for your time and thoughts!
Unison is exactly what you need, it works like a charm. The first run can take a while but subsequent runs are very quick. If you are a subscriber, there are a few articles in back issues of the mag covering Unison.

You probably need to change the boot order in your laptops bios

according to your laptops documentation:

BIOS utility

The BIOS utility is a hardware configuration program built into your
computer's BIOS.
Your computer is already properly configured and optimized, and you do not
need to run this utility. However, if you encounter configuration problems, you
may need to run it.
To activate the BIOS utility, press <F2> during the POST; while the notebook PC
logo is being displayed.

Boot sequence

To set the boot sequence in the BIOS utility, activate the BIOS utility, then select
Boot from the categories listed at the top of the screen.

So basically mash F2 when you turn on your laptop and cross your fingers that the bios opens. Then select boot from the categories and select the first device as your cd/dvd drive

You should normally update it using your distro's repositories, not using the TB update feature.

In my Ubuntu 10.04 running TB 10 after today's update from TB 9 (I have the stable firefox and TB ppa repos enabled) Ido not even have the option to update the whole application in the TB Preferences dialog. Only the add-ons can be updated that way.

Another point, why would poor developing nations want to adopt old bulky linux computers for the classroom, when they can get a slick cheap tablet

So they don't soon go walkies out of the classroom door?

I've had a paper subscription to Linux Format for a while now and I'm getting to the stage where I've got a fair amount of dead tree sitting in my shelves, taking up valuable space in my flat

I would like to go to a Digital-only subscription.. But I'm a little hesitant because of what is offered by Linux Format..

I have also started a shorter-term subscription to Linux Journal... Their model is far-from perfect, but I really prefer the addition download formats they offer (besides PDF, which is.. let's face it, the most useless use of a computer ever... emulating paper?!?!)

additionally, I feel their is an increasing trend towards i-devices which I am a little perturbed by.. howabout an EPUB and/or MOBI optimized version LXF people? I don't feel it's essential to register it to the amazon whispernet and all that cruft...

And that, is the end of my mini-rant (i think)
I'd like to see 64 bit, but only because its a new starting point of hardware capabilities rather than 32 bit distros compiled for older standards.

From a LXF pov, I suppose they should be thinking why they provide the disk, that would probably steer things in the best direction.

personally, used 64 bit for 4+ years, maybe play with the provided distros, but i could actually not have the disk and still be happy with my subscription. do play with the distros on there, but only because i have it, how many ppl here would have no chance of downloading a distro with todays broadband availability, as i only really download something that either takes my interest or has a good LXF review/article.

Thing to take from it though, not everyone will be happy with with whatever change is made, but then that's what makes linux users such an interesting bunch

                                      Hi Blkbx,

Can you obtain an internet connection from a host directly plugged into the LAN port of adsl modem?

If this is true, and it is obtained over dhcp, take a note of the automatically configured dhcp settings (default gateway, ip address, netmask)
Then when you connect the "internet" port on your router to the "lan" port on the modem, in bridged mode, it should obtain dhcp from the modem

(sorry if i've over simplified to the point of patronising...)
I suspect that all those who had signatures with links before the new ruling came in can keep them, but that the board software is not capable of distinguishing between editing an existing link and creating a new one. Either way, it involves a link pattern being made in the signature field.
It is, of course, possible to delete the link completely and make do with a text comment of some sort. You could always try applying to one of the site admins to update your link if it's really important to you, but it would need to be an admin as moderators don't have sufficient access.
