Rhakios wrote:

On my own system there is an entry under LibreOffice>Preferences>LibreOffice Base>Databases for a bibliography (not something I put there, it's there by default), perhaps if there are no databases registered it might not prompt you for Java?

I see that I too have a similar entry, so I tried moving the file somewhere else temporarily - but I still got the error message.

Rhakios wrote:

LO used to need Java for help to work as well. I don't know if that's still the case in LO4.x, but you could try disabling the help agent as well.

Tried that as well - still makes no difference.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I may well have a go at NeoOffice and see what it's like. I do a great deal of word processing and a fair amount of spreadsheeting, whether that be in Windows, Linux or Mac, so I need some sort of office suite on my Mac mini.

                                      I had a quick google for UEFI Toshiba and got this page: http://forums.toshiba.com/t5/Windows-8-Knowledge-Base/How-To-Enter-the-system-BIOS-or-UEFI-in-Windows-8/ta-p/329292

Don't know if it is any help as my hardware still uses rubber bands to start up

                                      1) Suggest using 6.20 instead.

2) Use syslinux to start a floppy image.

3) I'm sure there are more experienced users here to say why.

It was pushed as a better Windows than Windows itself .. Towards the end, the price did drop in a desperate attempt to build some kind of viable user base.

Maybe those later days are what I remember. I came in at v2.0 and went through to v3 (Warp). Early on I approached IBM with a technical query and for some reason they assumed I was an OS/2 "Reseller". From then on I got free copies of all variants (except server). I sold them recently, some still shrink-wrapped, on eBay - to keen buyers. I also attended a free OS/2 course at IBM Warwick.

guy wrote:

I can't recall if OS/2 actually contained MS code - it may well have done - but it certainly incorporated Microsoft IP at a very deep level.

Versions 1.x were written by an alliance of IBM and MS, so it was joint IP. Of course the code diverged after the break-up, and some of it went into Windows NT. Eg its file system, NTFS, was an evolution of OS/2's HPFS, and I believe the OS/2 printing system was still there at least into XP.

IBM somehow retained the right to distribute Windows 3.x with OS/2 (for a royalty). This was not Windows code in OS/2, it was a customised Windows itself running in a VM hosted by OS/2. In 1994 I found it awsome to see a Windows desktop [ie Program Manager] running in a window on the OS/2 desktop, as seen here :-

Of course you could not separate the Windows code out (or maybe a serious hacker could have). You could buy OS/2 with or without Windows in it (and if without you could then install a copy of Windows yourself). I had all these versions!

guy wrote:

IBM were incompetent in some areas too, but it was the MS action that struck the lethal blow: after that, it was only a matter of time.

I was taking MS opposition and dirty tricks as read. It was the threat of OS/2 that started MS punishing PC makers if they did not pre-load Windows. I was highlighting the incompetance of IBM senior management in the face of that. Another example is that they wasted developers' time trying to get OS/2 to run on 286's, even after 386s were already on sale. At the time it was assumed that non-power users always be using 286s (enough for anybody) for years to come. But the processor arms race then took off and a very short while we were all on 486s and then Pentiums.
The reason I have given this away is/was because I needed an audio input for a simple MacBook Pro
Python Audio-Oscilloscope I am developing.

Machine:- Apple MacBook Pro 13 inch.

OSX 10.7.5...

Vintage:- August 2012.

Common 3.5mm Mic/Ear socket cable for external MONO audio input, (and stereo audio output)…

Plug required, (or similar)...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-5mm-Mini-Jack-Right-Angle-90-Degree-Solder-4-Pole-Male-Plug-Connector-/320770305756

Resistor, 2K2, 1/8 W, 10% tolerance...

This is the wiring for the auto-switching of the Mic input to external…

Pins.               Wiring.
-----    TIP        -------
1 ---->  O  <----- Left Audio Output +ve.
2 ---->  H  <----- Right Audio Output +ve.
3 ---->  H  <----- Mono (Mic) Input, Active.
4 ----> H <----- Common To All Inputs And Outputs.
---
|   |
|   |______
|__________|=========

For the auto-switching capability a 2K2 resistor must be connected across Pins 3 and 4. [Mono (Mic) Input, Active and Common]…

Test by plugging into the socket and check that the "System Preferences > Sound" switches over to external input and output.

You now have two audio outputs at low impedance and an analogue audio input at around 2K2 _impedance_.

Do NOT drive the input with more than 100mV AC and do NOT connect to a DC _supply_ either.

Do NOT load the audio outputs with less than 33 Ohm resistors.

Do NOT assume that Common is connected to GND, Ground, of the computer, aothough it may well be.

I am assuming that if you are capable of doing this that you are also capable of doing the subtle level tests etc...
