Hi,

The system should log you in automatically with no need to enter a username or password. However, there seems to be a problem affecting a few people where this doesn't work. At the moment, we're not sure exactly what's causing it and we haven't been able to replicate it here.

It's possible that there are a few faulty discs. The MD5sum of the disc I have that works is 1c9747758906617adf73a6b266f325f1 . If yours is different, contact discsupport@futurenet.com, they'll be able to send you a new disc.

It's also possible that there is a problem with some hardware configurations. If you have another computer available, could you try it on that and let me know if it works please?

Mepis hasn't had a stable release since 2011 and only had alpha releases in 2012.

I hope that doesn't give anyone the impression that Mepis is defunct. There is a very active forum forum.mepiscommunity.org and Mepis v12 is in preparation. Mepis is not meant to be a cutting edge distro.

Er ..... Not sure which of CentOS or Scientific users you mean are the less inclined to use Distrowatch. But as they are both aimed at corporate and institutional users I would guess that their inclinations are about the same as each other.

Interesting use of the word reasonable.

I would imagine it takes long enough to write up an article like that, without arranging all the relevant notes in publishable form. You can see, towards the end, that the standard of writing slips (more that usual); a sure sign of a tired writer.

UPDATE: Still had the same problem with the latest LXF DVD's. It seems to only happen if I restart to boot. If I shutdown and then boot up they work.

Very odd... and most of my older CD/DVD's work fine whichever way I boot from them.

Is this a bizarre hardware fault or something different in the way Live CD/DVD's are created? Linux User DVD's don't work from a restart either...

I guess it has to be something about my hardware/BIOS as I havent heard of anyone else with this problem...

Cheers,
It is very important that you get the NATing correct. I can (almost) reproduce your error.

You have to make sure that you set up masquerading on the interface that has the 10.0.2.x address, otherwise it won't work. The tutorial specifies masquerading on eth1. In my case eth1 has the address 192.168.1.2, so masquerading will not work. When I changed the masquerading to happen on eth0 everything worked.

When I wrote 'almost' above it meant that I got the 'unknown host' message, but not the 'ping 74.125.225.165 – 100% packet loss' message. The only explanation I can find is that you somehow got the DNS entry for google.com cached locally.

I hope this gets your tutorial working as well.

If you are after a paper version there are about half a dozen on the magazine shelves at my Local ASDA (and presumably everyone else's) right now (April 2013). It looks well produced but may or may not include re-runs of or updated versions of articles which have already appeared in the mainstream Linux Format magazine (as well as other material that I have not seen before). I didn't buy it because I felt that it was about 4-5 pounds overpriced, but you can make you own judgement about that when you see it of course.

I wouldn't mind seeing a real 'Raspberry Pi Format' launched, perhaps as a quarterly to start with.

I've just built myself a RepRap (reprap.org) - which, quite frankly is bloomin' ace. I can now print all the lego bits I'll ever need...

The basic software for the reprap is GPL, but there are loads of more sophisticated CAD programs, including Blender, that are available for Linux. I'd love a review of 3D printing / reprap capable CAD programs to appear in the mag. Any chance...?

The RepRap was invented by a guy from Bath Uni, so I'm sure LF can easily get hold of some hardware if they ask nicely
It makes a change to see a disto so up to date!

Gnome 2.30! Firefox 14.0.1!

Perhaps next issue we could have a review of Yggdrasil or a similar cutting edge distro!

Seriously though, I get that some distros ship with less modern software for stability or lighter weight options for less able systems, but to give top billing to this one is a joke.

I won't be downloading Rebellin
It's not cutting edge, it provides little in the way of thrills and they have the balls to charge you for it!!! I don't even think there's a niche it actually fulfils.

Realistically I don't think you should be too critical of Susan Linton here - she sums it up very well in her article the way I read it and rightly advises you that unless you have some personal reason to help the author stay afloat with his "unremarkable" distro then save your $5 contribution and ignore the distro. The "Adreneline" version sounds like it is more current than the other version but is only in 32 bit and lacks anything special at all to make it stand out from the crowd.

So Susan shelled out $5 to let us have her view on it - she has saved me $5 if I had been the slightest interested so thanks to Susan rather than knocking her.

As rightly pointed out, she does cover quirky distros at times but she also covers the mainstream ones as well. The beauty of Susan's articles in my view is that she generally tells it the way she sees it rather than sugar coating them. She openly admits that she isn't one of todays people with a smartphone glued to her ear and so her likes and dislikes may be different to some but for what its worth I think she is up front about that as well. Should be more like her instead of just preaching what the various manufacturers and contributors give in their spin sheets. As for the top billing aspect - I had never considered there were any billings with Distrowatch - just the next one in the queue gets their distro written up. No big fizz.

Lets all lighten up and enjoy our diverse universe which is Linux. I love it and all its many quirks, just like I loathe the quirks such as Linux SOUND or the all too often lack of it.
If the monitor were refusing to display the output from the computer, it would show nothing but a message along the lines of "signal out of range".

I'd try a text mode install, at least then you can see where it is failing.

Update: The memory test went OK.

As I'm installing from the LXF coverdisks I'm not offered the option for a text install rather than a gui installer, I just choose the OS from the DVD boot menu and then, when in the 'live' version of the OS, double click on the desktop 'install' icon, which runs the graphical install.

But this is interesting: I have another idle Windows XP PC, 1GB Ram, 2.66Ghz Celeron, onboard (probably Intel) graphics, and so I took the same HDD and installed Ubuntu on it without any problems - only problem is, it runs quite slowly. Although the original machine mentioned has a slower processor, it has a much higher end motherboard, so I took the HDD out of the 2.66Ghz machine and put it into the 1.6 Duron to see what happened.

..And it just started up and worked - in fact, I'm using it to send this to the forum now as it runs at a respectable speed on this hardware. So it does seem to be a 'failure of the installer' problem on this machine - rather than a failure of / incompatibility with the OS.

I'm now going to try the same with Mint 14 - install it on a HDD installed in the 2.66Ghz PC and then swap it into this machine to see how it runs.

The object of all this is to try out the most 'consumer friendly' versions of Linux that I can find (by consumer friendly, I mean those versions which offer as much multimedia power and capability as Windows, or nearly so, out of the box, or with a minimum of extra configuration).

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I was forced to change my main PC just about a month after Microsoft pulled their perfectly decent Windows 7 from the shelves and replaced it with the horror that is Windows 8, and so I ended up with 8. I have never seen a better excuse to abandon Windows.

                                      Mostly for your information:

The Wordpress plugins installed in the Vulnerable Machine are not enabled 'out of the box'. In order to get the most out of the tutorial they should be enabled. This is easily done: Login as 'admin/password', select Plugins in the left hand column and click 'enable' found right under the name of the plugin. Then logout and continue enjoying the tutorial.

Personally I find the tutorial most informative - I have already seen quite a few vulnerabilities in the Worpress sites a I manage

PS The above is true both for the version on the DVD and the downloadable version.

I thought covers and disks was an odd place , but that's where Bruno's thread went so I went there too. Sorry.

Before I get back to Bruno's flowprocess, I wanted to get straight on the DNSs. I'm not understanding what I found out with pings, ifconfig, and dig. Here's the results:

==================================

PINGS:
dave@tower-salineos-base:~$ ping laptop-mepis-host
PING laptop-mepis-host (66.152.109.23) 56(84) bytes of data. (Freezes)

dave@tower-salineos-base:~$ ping 192.168.2.147
PING 192.168.2.147 (192.168.2.147) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 192.168.2.147: icmp_req=1 ttl=64 time=0.965 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.2.147: icmp_req=2 ttl=64 time=1.03 ms
etc.....

Laptop to tower-salineos-base contacts laptop, then freezes.
Laptop to 192.168.2.100 contacts tower, then freezes

DIG, FROM TOWER TO LAPTOP:

FIRST TIME:
dave@tower-salineos-base:~$ dig laptop-mepis-host

Second time from tower to laptop, same except different id number.

Dig from laptop to tower exactly the same except for different id number.

I tried dig 192.168.2.147 from the tower, and the results were slightly different than using the hostname:

dave@tower-salineos-base:~$ su
Password:
root@tower-salineos-base:/home/dave# dig 192.168.2.147

--------------------------

DNS numbers (ifconfig -a): Laptop: 192.168.2.147; Tower: 192.168.2.100
(Both are the same after reboot).

================================

As you can see, the pings from tower to laptop freeze when using the hostname but proceed OK when using the DNS number; however, the pings from the laptop to the tower freeze either way. Digs seem to work in both directions with the hostnames, but they varied depending on whether I used the hostname or the DNS number (especially in the ANSWER section.

Also, the DNS numbers from Dig are different from ifconfig, and the server is the router DNS.

You mentioned cleaning up the config files; there are config files in ~/.ssh, /etc/ssh/ssh_config and sshd_config (neither of which seem to have DNSs in them). are there any others? /user/share/ssh contains some blacklists; do I need to worry about them?

In faith, Dave
