Yeah, it's weird how they have all these neat things, but still, I love my gedit and keep using it. I remember just starting out with html. The WYSIWYG was essential to me, but now, I'm probably just as quick to do things 'by hand' -- if you know what I mean

I finally made the cold turkey / complete cutover from Windows a couple months ago after years of dabbling with dual boot.

The first thing I did upon making the switch was find a Dreamweaver replacement. I quick tested most of the software listed above by others, but settled on Aptana 3. I found little issues each day at the beginning. Lately though I find little things that I like more each day. I code websites about 2/3 of my week, so I need something that works. The only real issues I have with it are occasional glitches with FTP (although they could be my issue) and slow uploads when using SFTP or FTPS.

To me, Aptana 3 has worked far better than the others I have found.

I think http://www.seamonkey-project.org/ has some kind of html visual editor.

Have a look at kompozer as well; it's a gui, wysiwyg web-page authoring application which I used in the past, but not for a few years, so it may have changed out of all recognition.

The problem with drag and drop at this level is that there are so many options. What Bluefish offers is tag completion; so as soon as you enter a letter a list of all the options starting with that letter pops up and, if it requires a closing tag, the closing tag is inserted as well.

If you want something more GUI oriented, you need to think about Drupal or similar.

Can anyone recommend software to use for Web Site Authoring? This is principally for a beginner friend, though I might be interested too. I have done some websites myself using a 'plain' text editor - Kate in fact - but I was thinking about something more specialised.

The most recent LXF roundup I could find is in Issue 115 (Feb 09) in which Bluefish came out top. However, going to their website :

.. and watching their demo, it only looks like a glorified text editor with some built-in ftp functionality ("deployment"). I was expecting more drag-and-drop facilities (but keeping the option to edit the code too), or is that expecting too much from open source? Or am I missing something?

What about Aptana (not reviewed by LXF) :

.. which looks a bit commercial, though open source. I would appreciate hearing the experience of others.
