I have tried Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric and tried to install Google Chrome and when i am trying to open it with Ubuntu Software Center it gives you this error?
Internal error

�the file google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb can't be opened�

Why aren't you answering peoples questions ? .. it will be impossible to diagnose the issue with anything more than a guess unless you post the *exact* make/model of your graphics chip.

Again... enter this in a terminal:

Code:

sudo lshw -C display

hit enter, and your password when asked... then post the output back here.

i915 mode setting may or may not be the issue here... it will be impossible to give a definitive answer without knowing more about your hardware.

got Ubuntu 10.04 working on my laptop
Had to use: i915.modeset=1 to install from live cd boot from grub.

Everything works fine, one bug I found is trying rhythmbox with visuals crashes, but it doesn't bother me since I run it minimized in the system tray. This might help with the graphics problems you're having.

Anything that runs on Ubuntu should run in Xubuntu, provided the packages and dependences are installed

Yes, it's strange I can't get it to work. I get the same problem with 11.04 and whether I try the LXF disks or downloads. Only 9.10 works and it works great.
I'm tempted to try Xubuntu but can I still install Spotify under wine and java etc for iplayers and the like?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on a Acer Travelmate laptop running at 1.3Ghz, with 1GB Memory of which 16Mb shared for Intel Graphics.

Gnome Desktop, works ok for me.

If you're unsure of the GPU, enter this in a terminal and post the output:

Perhaps you would have more luck with Xubuntu? The desktop is lighter so you might not have so many graphics problems.

I had problems when installing a "fresh" copy of Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS on my 7 year old Dell laptop with Intel graphics.

I was left with a black/blank screen until I modified the GRUB.

What are the specs of your machine???

You could try installing libasound2 (1.0.22) from this PPA:

or

Try using the Lucid version like this guy did:

But it must be an "at your own risk" kind of thing

I'm with RedWillow on this... I'd be more inclined to try sort out the issue with later versions of Ubuntu.

Well - since Mint 11 is based on Ubuntu 11.04, that is unlikely to get you very far if versions of Ubuntu newer than 9.10 give you video artefacts and lagging.

Sounds like a graphics card issue, possibly an older chipset where the newer versions of xserver and the video driver have left it behind. What GPU is it? Laptop or desktop? System specs?
