I'm using ubuntu 11.10 - I kept the specifics out of it in case there was a generic way of doing stuff .

Ah, but adding repo's isn't enough Nelz... You'd also need to install the required keys so apt[-get|itude] won't complain about untrusted sources But, one could always specify those beforehand, just after overwriting the entire sources.list from said script

Hmmm, interesting thought. Maybe I'll try this out in a VM later

Yes.

If you want to know how, it might be a good idea to specify your distro. for a Debian derivative, it would mainly consist of a series of apt-get install calls, possibly preceded by adding repositories to /etc/apt/sources.list.

... to create a script or download template which will automatically fetch and install your favourite progs each time you do a fresh install?
