I won't buy from Sony ever again. I haven't forgiven them for removing the option to install Linux on the PS3.

I have had a bog standard B series sony walkman for my years, its even been through the washing machine and survived after it spent a few hours drying out.
Mine was a bit more than �40, however, looking at the current prices, you can get them direct from sony for �35:

I've just written off my 3rd Sansa Clip. First one I dropped on the floor. Second one I dropped on the floor. Third one was dropped numerous times with no issues. But now the volume up button doesn't turn it up. In fact it turns it down.

My main issue is that my old mp3 players all had a string (or at least the hole for one). The clip doesn't. So when the clip eventually snaps, I end up dropping it regularly. These clips break easily, although the latest one is still intact that way.

So... it's quest for a new mp3 player time.

My needs:

4GB minimum
Mass Storage Class as an option. I don't use crappy itunes etc. I refuse to sync.
Rechargeable by usb. I don't do batteries.
Rugged. It must be drop proof.
Room for a string.
Not the size of a brick.
�40 or less.

Any recommendations?
