Thanks John_Stiles that makes it very flexible, I knew I could save files but had not tried to update apps.
I too like to keep one or two distros handy on a usb key either for rescue purposes or simply to try out new ideas.
What a fantastic system we enjoy!
Hi Cushie,

When you say, "And the Ubuntu solution just makes a install copy like the CD-installer." If you boot into the normal welcome screen, press the "Try Ubuntu" button it will give you what you want. It will load a normal desktop from which you can add software, update and upgrade software.

I keep an Ubuntu USB key up to date as an emergency backup. It should be possible to bypass the initial welcome screen and I recommend setting a user password, particularly if you are going to save personal data on it.

Hope that helps

Yes, you can do that with 'Startup Disc Creator' in Ubuntu providing this programme will recognise the '.iso' which it does not always do.
If it does accept the iso the program allows you to set part of the usb for 'persistent' files by adjusting the slider.

I have had success with standard Ubuntu isos but not
for example it does not recognise the CorePlus.iso on the dvd or a copy of it on the Hdd.

                                      Hi all.
I have a wish I need some help with.
I like to be able to install and run a distro from a USB-stick on various PCs.
It should be possible to remove/add software and save the work I’m doing.
Anyone who know how to do that?
I have tried the Universal USB Installer in Windows and the default USB-creator in Ubuntu, but USB-installer version crashes at GRUB-start. And the Ubuntu solution just makes a install copy like the CD-installer.

Is it possible to do what I’m dreaming of? And if yes – how?

Since I am not a hardcore Linuxuser, I would like to avoid the terminal…

Yours Sincerely
Sandersson

Ps. Please excuse my English, it is not my first langue.
