Well, yeah, I could do that but do I really want arbitrary apps to run as root? Google certainly don't seem to think it is a good idea.

I don't have a locked drawer. The kids accidentally "borrowed" and lost the keys longer ago than I care to remember.

Why back up device-specific stuff when a dead device means buying a new device? I mean, it's not as if I am going to take risks with the config settings by rooting it or something. This is a consumer device and I am a dumb consumer not a Linux geek (ducks for cover). I don't backup my TV or my car or my washing machine settings, why my tablet?

since nobody can help me - I will post here what I experienced so far.

The ZINIO digital version of LFX magazine can only be read on Apple I-stuff, Android and WIN 8 tablet-phone. It can not be displayed by Linux machines at all. Makes no sense to me. The .pdf files are protected. One needs a password to display on a desktop PC.
No one is willing to tell me where I can buy such a password.

Who put that password protection into the .pdfś ?
ZINIO or Linux Format or is ZINIO forced to put it in.

So far I bought a GBP 50.00 ZINIO subscription, which I will never renew,
I had to buy the back issues on top of it mailed to California, another GBP 50.00

I would like to see a complete how to on getting digital content, view and print on desktops.

I presume the method with Clonezilla is to put the target drive into a spare slot in the "donor" tower and connect into a SATA socket rather than using an external HD box and USB?

If you haven't tried SSH, how did you run exportfs? Or did you run it on the client? I meant to run it on the NAS, it shows how its NFS shares are set up.

Can you mount the shares as root? Only root can mount devices not in /etc/fstab, so you need to add them there and put "users, noauto" in the list of options to allow any user to mount a share on demand. Or leave those options out and let the shares mount when you boot - depending on whether the NAS is always available.
Yes, this is an area for copyright not patent.

With a patent you are registering/protecting a tangible object tht does something. Copyright protects the specific expression of an idea.

For example, Edgar Allen Poe's 'Murders in the Rue Morgue' is frequently cited as the first detective novel (Wilkie Collins' fans claim 'The Woman in White').

If patents can be applied to an idea in software, why not in a novel? In which case nobody else would be allowed to write a detective novel without paying fees to Poe's estate.

This is what the Americans have done to software with the ridiculous application off patents to something that was sufficiently protected by copyright - especially as the US led the way with their Mickey Mouse extension to the life of copyright while Cliff Richard et al are trying to extend it ludicrously here as well.

                                      Hi,

The system should log you in automatically with no need to enter a username or password. However, there seems to be a problem affecting a few people where this doesn't work. At the moment, we're not sure exactly what's causing it and we haven't been able to replicate it here.

It's possible that there are a few faulty discs. The MD5sum of the disc I have that works is 1c9747758906617adf73a6b266f325f1 . If yours is different, contact discsupport@futurenet.com, they'll be able to send you a new disc.

It's also possible that there is a problem with some hardware configurations. If you have another computer available, could you try it on that and let me know if it works please?

I am looking for a program that will provide a list of my files and I can add comments to. An index list (maybe data base) of my files that I can add things like authors, description etc.

When the indexer is run it would try to match the previous comments with the correct file, even if it has moved.

I would not mind having to guarantee a degree of unique file naming.

Please, do you have any application suggestions?

All the best,
Ok, so if I edit the crontab with crontab -e and enter what you suggest I'll be good to go ? Thanks for your help

nelz wrote:

There are plenty of site that put man pages online, such as http://linux.die.net/man/5/crontab

Cron sends an email of the job's output automatically, as long as you tell it where to send it by setting MAILTO=you@your.email at the top of the crontab. If the job gives no output on successful completion, which is usually desirable, you only want to know when something is wrong, you can call the command from a script

Code:

#!/bin/sh
and have cron run that script.

Do I get noddy points for not being on @pirate-friendly-webmail.com?"

Yeah, weird bloody site! I was proposed by a friend and tried to join. Asks me for my email address and complains that it does 'not support that webmail provider'. 0x46 you I thought, and sent a complaint to their support with an offer to fix the problem of braindead email validation. Took them 2 weeks to get back to me (during which time I received auto-generated emails to the address that they apparently rejected) and ask for a screenprint of the issue, despite original mail giving detailed explanation. I sent one and pointed out that it was unnecessary as they could just add a well-formed email address and see the problem. Eventually they explained that this email address was wanted so that they could harvest my contacts. ox46 them. It does not mention this on the page - a possible breach of data protection rules? Still asks for my email anytime I connect (rarely) and still rejects it.

<irony>in middle of typing this I received an email from Linkedin with short descriotions of jobs and links - only the links were missing!</irony>
One might suggest that a similar shade of red may develop after following-up some of the suggestions sent to me. "Oh my, you've gone all Vauxhall pink again. Bad day at the office, dear?"

Back off-topic, either Vauxhall have shares in a paint company, or their customers don't like the boring colour-fast shades of red, typically pigmented, and prefer the vibrant but fugitive (short-lived) dyed paints, sometimes bound in the form of "lakes".
