I'm a Linux noob. Last weekend I installed SuSE 9.1, this weekend I upgraded to 10.0. So I have registered here and will be visiting both the suggested links above. I'll be back.

Yeah, tuxmagazine is good for newbies also, and as a result I posted a link to it in my links section.

The difference between a magazine is that a mag can't repeat the same information every month, to show a newbie how to do the same thing over and over again - my site does, because the content is always there, it just gets updated over time.

monetised was not found in the dictionary.

Did you spell it correctly? Here are some possible alternatives:

- mad (MENTALLY ILL)
- mad (FOOLISH)
- mad (ANGRY)
- mad (ENTHUSIAST)

Not sure where it got the link from monetised to mad was though.........

hmm. I am unsure as to why you are so mad, linuxgirlie.

I did think that the word 'monetised' was marketing guff too. The button is courtest of google, not myself - it denounces that the site's only source of income is from clicks of google AdSense ads, as are a great many sites on the web. The miniscule amount I make from these clicks reflects my work on the site. It's a little reward, and spurs me on to spending more time and money on the site. For example, i bought a vmware license to do screenshots for linux on linux with it.

Hope this answer removes your rage somewhat.

Regards,

Just one little thing - in your software installation guide (source), what happened to "make install"?

you have a button at the bottom of the site that uses the term "monetised" could you please explain this term as it isn't a real word in my humble estimation although there does seem to be a similar word except it uses a Z instead of the S but that is an American word and doesn't count

I have to say that if your hot topics include compiling from source and chasing up dependencies, your Chapter 1 includes a rundown of UNIX flavours, and you introduce X before GNOME and KDE, then your site is aimed squarely at the noob who wants to become a techie rather than someone who just wants to go do personal stuff using a nicer box than the last one.

Having said that, it looks a great start. Good luck.

                                      Hi,

I've trawled the web for ages to find a site that properly answers the majority of the questions complete Linux newbies have. Good mags like LXF have done wonders, but there is only limited space in a magazine every month, especially in the Letters section!

Googling for newbie sites throws up lots of forums and a few boring mainly text websites on starting up with linux, but there isn't any proper high quality sites out there that I can find.

So, I wrote my own one

Linuxnewbieguide.org is a user friendly, step by step introduction for complete newbies to Linux. It assumes almost no computer knowledge whilst at the same time not treating you like an Idiot, guiding you through choosing a Linux distribution, installing it (step-by-step graphical walk through of Ubuntu 5.10 included), as well as information about installing software and much more that a newbie just needs to know.

Check it out today at: www.linuxnewbieguide.org and let me know what you think!

Cheers!
