I fixed it in the end. Started VNC server (as suggested above) and opened the appropriate port in the firewall. The YAST GUI, though, still shows the service as being turned OFF.

Odd.
Tried that - no luck.

True, the vnc server needs to be started after the rcxdm restart suggested by YAST but the Allow Remote Administration setting in YAST remains as OFF i.e. the radio button hasn't chaged from the default to the new value.

It looks to me as if the GUI fails to write a new setting to a configurtaion file somewhere behind the scenes and if this is the case I should be able to fix this by editing the relevant file manually. Trouble is I don't know how to do this.

The problem isn't confined to a single machine, by the way. I have tried this on three different hardware setups with the same (non) result.
Are you resetting from the command line as it advises?

Have you got vncserver installed and running?
I think if you restart, it doesn`t initialise the vncserver.

open a shell, su to root, and type "vncserver".

There appears to be a bug in YAST SuSE 9.2 Network Services | Remote Administration (or am I having a stupider than average day?)

If I change the radio button to enable Remote Administration, save the changes, restart & so forth, the system reverts to this option being set OFF

I have been through the same steps with the text based YAST with the same result.

Somewhere, I guess, (in etc, perhaps?) there must be a config file or something that I can edit by hand to get round this problem.

Any ideas anyone?
