It uses a special version of apt for rpms which was originally developed, I understand, by Connectiva. This enables the Synaptic front end to be added.

It makes for a much simpler method of pulling rpms from repositories than, for example, Mandriva's urpmi, where you need four separate interfaces for Adding, Removing and Updating software and Updating Package Information. Synaptic does this in one interface.

As a former Mandrake user I can assure you that Synaptic is much easier.

Just look at their website

Quote:

Software Updates

PCLinuxOS provides about 5,000 RPM software packages that are easily installed using apt-get with the Synaptic frontend. The Synaptic Software Manager provides a single frontend for installing, updating and removing software from your PCLinuxOS system. Updating your system is easy as 1- Reload file list, 2 Mark all updates and 3 - Click apply. It doesnt get any easier than this!

Confused greatly . Does it use RPM's or Deb packages. If it does use RPM's then why on Earth would they use Apt, surely Apt is designed for Deb packages and making one use the other would simply be unnecessary work.

I've been away for a few days so was not able to pass on last Friday's announcement that a "Mini-Me" version of PCLinuxOS version 0.93 has been released. Rather than have a "complete" set of software installed, the mini-me version is stripped down, so that you can add what you want instead.

Anyway, here is the official announcement:

-----------------------------------------------------------------

The PCLinuxOS 0.93 MiniME 286 mb

PCLinuxOS 0.93 MiniME is available for download and testing. This release is
for those who have been asking for a minimum livecd/hd install allowing for
full personalization. This release includes 2.6.15-oci3 kernel, Basic KDE
3.5.2 desktop (kdebase and kdelibs only) , PCLOS Control Center, the Synaptic
Software Installer and a customized xorg server from Thac to provide
additional 3D support for many graphic cards. Full Version of PCLinuxOS 0.93
is currently being worked up and should be available soon.

Current Mirrors for MiniMe:

http://ftp.nluug.nl/ftp/pub/os/Linux/distr/texstar/pclinuxos/live-cd/english/preview/
