that gambas is just the ticket, the only thing that confuses me tho ... what language(s) does it accept. his site mentions visual basic and gambas (as a language),

am pretty good with VBscript but have never done vb is it quite similiar ?

                                      >>
Kylix throws up errors saying it can't find or access a shared file.
>>

I think there may be a number of env variables that may need to be set in your ".profile" or ".bash_profile" to do with kylix. Due to libraries not being in the standard locations. It's been quite a while and i haven't got it installed, but iirc i think thats probably it. It should be in the install docs. You may even have to add a path to your /etc/ld.so.config. It's not nesseccary to include the standard locations in that file ... /lib, /usr/lib, as they default anyway. I can remember having a lot of hope for kylix but i could never get the gui scheme fonts to render more than about 6pt .... so, that was that.

>>
damn complicated borland products
>>

Yeah, they do that on purpose too (grin). Really nice in windows though, 'cept for the crashes.

You can achieve the same things with Linux but, it is done by using a collection of bits & bobs that hang together by a very weak thread.
You can probably design, write & deploy a Delphi database app in less time than it will take you to get one of the Linux database servers up and running.
or just use Kylix, unless you're excluding this because it's not open source?

                                      >>
can anyone recommend a RAD for developing standard apps under linux, I installed Kdevelop, is that gonna do the job ?
>>

Carn't miss an opportunity to give www.fltk.org a plug. It's about as standard as it gets. But i quite like Athena. Probably more a learning tool, than a work tool though. But, a nice smooth designer, none the less.

Carn't remember reading any comment on "BXPro 6" from lxf33B cd, November 2002 when it was there. One of those expensive environments i think. Still got the disc. I was always meaning to try its' demo out. One never knows (grin)

If you come from a Borland Cbuilder/Delphi background you are quickly going to find out just how spoilt (in a nice way) you have been while using these tools.

You can achieve the same things with Linux but, it is done by using a collection of bits & bobs that hang together by a very weak thread.
You can probably design, write & deploy a Delphi database app in less time than it will take you to get one of the Linux database servers up and running.

Practice, practice & more practice is where it's at and it feels like trying to work with one arm missing.

I've used
Kdevelop for c++ coding
QT libraries for database access components
Postgres database
pgsql ? Postgres data table design

All seperate programmes that more or less fit together and allow you to get data into a database. I'm still working on how to get pretty printed reports out though.
There are Windows & Linux versions available for database and web applications.

                                      Hi,

Check out ATK at www.achievo.org/atk. This isn't a gui RAD but you can get a web based application up and running quite quickly once you understand the framework. By creating a framework which provides all of the coding for presentation layer and logic, it leaves you to concentrate on the business logic. I mentioned it a couple of threads up from this one, so far I am pretty impressed and I am looking forward to coding using this framework.
I'm not sure, but I think qtdesigner may be free.

It also might be a RAD tool, but I'm not sure since I haven't used it in years, and even then I only used it briefly.

The only other one I can think of at the minute would be Gambas, which is a bit like VB, except uses a more sensable design.
