The first stat includes people browsing all non-forum pages on the site. We've been Slashdotted and OSNewsed many times in the last couple of years, and people still come to this site by following links in older articles.

And people clearly love the site too

Front page says ...

'Online
There are 474 unregistered users and 12 registered users on-line.'

Forum index page says ...

'In total there are 20 users online :: 1 Registered, 0 Hidden and 19 Guests'

Trivial, but i was wondering 'why is that ?'
