i think i have found best way to get around the problem.

on my works computer i went to http\\archive.unbuntu.com

in here are all the .deb packages . i just picked lots of gcc related ones. i then transferred the .deb's to my laptop and then installed .

so far so good.

Hi
im fairly new to unix. i just installed Linux Mint 5.0 light edition that i obtained from Linux Format magazine. everything looks great, i installed it on my laptop.

problem i am having is trying to install packages. main problem is that i do not have internet connection, and from what i have read it seems like using the package management is the easiest way to install things which seems to use internet to install all the dependencies.

it seems the default installation i made has installed gcc. but it seems the linker is broken.

whenever i try to install a .zip package by running ./configure i always get the same complaint as shown in this subject message. i can easily download source packages (.gz) from my works computer and store then on USB memeory stick and transfer them to my laptop, but obviously for me to build these packages i need gcc to be working correctly or this ld linker issue to work.

can anyone please help.
