Actually, I didn't do a reinstall. Sorta. I followed loads of different advice sets, none of which worked as advertised.

The last one said to reinstall, but not use the format option. How was I supposed to know that it'd remove some software! The guide (off ubuntu forums, which had lots of people saying how well it worked) seemed like a good method.

And yes. First thing I did was search round forums, starting with this one.

This topic has been covered many times! A quick google comes up with loads of help forum threads the best of which is here

heiowge you can expect a severe telling off from nelz for doing a re-install rather than fixing the problem
I have managed to get it back up and running, but had to reinstall and set up compiz, ubuntu tweak and god knows what else. I just wish that the discs had a "reinstall grub menu after windows install" option. Maybe a request for a new option for the cover discs?

Bearing in mind just how many linux users have dual boot systems with windows and that a lot of them will be installing Win7 atm, wouldn't it be nice to show just how easy it is to repair the damage windows does?

One idea would be to tell us the output from setup (hd0), then we might be able to do more than guess why it may have failed.

You can install Windows 7 to your Windows XP partition but you will have to rewrite the MBR using GRUB.

You can find the instructions at Reinstall Ubuntu Grub Bootloader After Windows Wipes it Out.

Ok, I'm sure it's possible. Is it easy though?

Can I replace XP on my XP / Ubuntu 9.04 dual boot with Windows 7 without major damage to my Ubuntu setup.

I can reinstall ubuntu but i'd rather not. I've only just got it back to the way I like it after the last reinstall!
