Ah, a lovely 120GB external hard drive is mine!

I'll have to get to know how to use udev now, though. Can't have this external HDD and my USB pen drive sharing /dev/sda1 in /etc/fstab. Off to find the nearest HOWTO...

So do these HDD enclosures work with the usb-storage module that's used for USB pen drives (for example), or will I need to enable something else in my kernel?

I just picked up a u/i enclosure from a computer fair for £6 and works wonderfully with my spare 40Gb 2.5" drive.
If you want the company details just let me know!
Surely a HDD enclosure doesn't need to 'work' with *nix. The USB interfaces is a standard so if USB works, these enclosures will.

Avoid LaCie. If you read their manuals they actively encourage people to avoid Unix filesystems in OS X and go for HFS+ instead. A very anti-*nix compnay it seems. I wrote a polite message to complain and stated my money was going elsewhere because of their lack of support.
I have a couple of USB2 Mobile Disk HD-337-U2 enclosures which I have had for several years now. I have switched different HDs into them at different times and they work fine with Linux and OS X. I don't know who sells them now though.

I'd like to get one of those HDD enclosure thingies that effectively turn an internal hard disk drive into an external drive that you can connect via USB.

Anyone got any recommendations, or words of warning about compatibility with Linux?

Thanks.
