I usually get the feeling that the gui writer is just flowing with what ever 'tool' their using to write up the gui. Except in the case of some distros where i get the feeling that there is an orchestrated attempt to bind the user to a way of doing things rather than actually providing a learning vector.

It all does get back to the user themselves really. While the graphical tool will provide an immediate means to an end, there shouldn't be much really, to stop the user from getting behind it. For instance - reading up on man/info and other docs, experimenting etc ...

Good_grief :- the whole idea of some sort of competition between the two is a detrimental approach to start with. Both ends of that string need to join, allowing a person to grab hold of it at any particular point and get a result.

Of course, distros that have cmd guies that take it on to themselves to over-ride a persons _choices_ really do need to be <cough> discouraged </cough>

Always the conundrum with linux... when you know deep down that a graphical interface for a CLI command is just taking up space and memory and you can't get over how wasteful it seems.

It's the same story with those impractical wobbly windows that tantalize me so...

Quite, stretching my memory to its limits, I think it was something like an archive manager that offered the extra feature of running configure>make and install. I might be conflating the memory with that of another tool that told you what dependencies were missing if things went awry.
I don't feel too much like digging through over 100 LXFs to find out though.

I do have a vague recollection of something like this, but many of my recollections are vague.

I take it your aren't thinking of checkinstall but something more inclusive?

The thing I vaguely recall was for compiling individual apps from source, rather than entire distros. I would think a former disc editor might remember such a thing.

Hi Rhakios...

I have a genuine "Fall Edition 1995 P'n'P YGGDRASIL" with
manual and goodies, and that installed much from the
source. It required two CDs; one to initiate a basic install
and the other to finish off with an "install" from the source
code.

It never worked...

Installed Windows 95 and that worked out of the box...

To nelz...

Did you ever get it working?

BTW "Helpdex" in LXF 138 is applicable to this thread... ;oD
