Ubuntu boot

Switch on to desktop in Ubuntu 10.04 about 40-45secs. I've a reasonable system based on AMD dual core Phenom X550.

Fortunately suspend works flawlessly on my system so I very rarely ever reboot, just push on-button and password screen pops up within about 5-6 secs and as soon as I enter password and press enter desktop appears immediately. Marvellous

Surprised at the difference.
My AA1 is the original linpus model boosted to 1.5Gb and a 16Gb
faster SSD, but my wife's with the original SSD takes about the same time.

I did add a couple of entries to the fstab and grub etc.
can't remember what offhand, but I think it was noatime in fstab entry, and mounting /log and /tmp in ram.
Oh, and adding elevator=noop to grub

Ubuntu Netbook 10.04 and Peppermint Ice dual boot. Both about the same. 40 secs from hitting the on switch and logging in. 15 secs to shutdown. I can be surfing with Firefox in less than 45 seconds from pressing the on switch.

Hp Mini netbook is about the same surprisingly. My 2.4gig Presario laptop with Xp and up to date takes about 3.5 minutes to fully boot!

I use them, but I don't reboot them.

Check your BIOS settings, there is often a setting for a faster POST (I can't check it myself as that would mean rebooting ).

Also check what peripherals you have enabled, it could be wasting time checking for non-existent floppy drives etc.

In the interest of science and complete boredom when I should be asleep, here are my results:
0-29s - Loading bios rubbish
29s - Get grub up (press enter as fast as i can to boot into linux
29-45s - loading ubuntu
45s - login screen
47s - press enter from password
49s - desktop ready to use.

Any ideas how I can cut down the bios loading time? I have no idea what it is doing for 30 secs!

Ubuntu 10.4 netbook edition takes about 11 seconds on my AA1, and about 6 seconds to shut down

That depends on a lot more than the distro - like the speed of your processor, the speed of your hard drive, the amount and speed of memory, which services you start and plenty more.

I don't worry about boot times as I hardly ever boot my computers.

I was asking just about Ubuntu as thats what I currently use. I wanted to know if it was the fastest or if other distros are faster loading up.

What do you mean? There are others???

My ubuntu takes ages sitting there when i turn on (bios do loads of random stuff) but when it has started, after I press enter from typing my password it is ready in about 3 secs.

I have Ubuntu 10.10 and takes almost exactly 60 seconds from turning on the PC, booting up, logging on.
