as stated above, depends on the netbook.
Some Atom processors are 64 bit, but the Intel chipsets recognise a maximum of 2GB, so there is no point running a 64 bit OS, quite the opposite.

Put the RAM in, boot a live distro and see how much is recognised. You won't do any damage as long as the RAM has the correct physicsl form factor.

It depends on the netbook, some use 32-bit chips and some 64-bit, and the amount of ram supported by the motherboard also varies. In any event, even 32-bit linux will recognise 4GB of ram if the hardware allows it.

Iv read somewere that netbooks are 64bits but only deign to take a max of 2 gb of ram when running windows
well when I was fitting a new hard drive to my girlfriends netbook I notice it has to slots for ram and only 1 is being used so since i have 2 x 2gb or ram spare I was wondering if I installed 64 bit ubuntu on if it would reconise it?
