Ollie: Don't think so, just got me a fancy new (closed circuit) water cooling system, rocking cpu temps of 26oC (used to be a whole load hotter)
Hard drive slow but working (I think/hope)
Also got new case.

Bazza: I've turned my computer today so won't be able to look till tomorrow but I'll try and take a photo. From what I can remember it defiantly says something about memory.
The graphics card is the oldest component in the box, but it is only a couple of years old

                                      What does the BSOD say?

It reads like a video card initialisation problem.

Working in the low memory area but not in its native mode on cold start.

Try a temporary replacement with a known good video card to prove.
I have tried it at home and at uni (>300 miles apart...), same result. Using new power cable that came with new psu.

I would agree this looks like a power problem. As you have changed the PSU it could be the power connector on the mother board which is faulty which means changing the board out.

There is a possibility that the mains could be faulty. Without an electrical tester the only way to check is to plug the PC in at another house. It could also be a faulty connection in the cable between your PC and the mains socket.

Ok poeple this is serious now.

When ever my computer has been off for >5hours it has issues starting up.

Basically what happens is I turn it on at the wall, turn it on, then wait a bit, it dies (windows bsod or ubuntu just freezes), I hold down power button, it turns off, I turn psu off, wait 10 sec, turn it psu on again, and all is ok.

Sometimes I can log in to ubuntu, then things start dying slowing; I will get messages like 'bla bla program quit unexpectedly, do you want to restart it'

I have replaced motherboard, ram and now psu.
This is what I currently have:

Asus M4A89TD Pro USB3
AMD Phenom II X6 1055T
GeForce GTS 250 graphics card
OCZ 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800
850W Antec PSU (was 500W)

so basically having brought 2 pcs (I'm giving the other one to my brother, aren't I nice?) i'm a bit angry that it still don't work as I want!

I was convinced it was the PSU but after replacing that it still don't work. Grr

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to test or replace next?

(Oh and when I run a mem test when I first turn on I get a bunch of errors, and if I run it after turning psu on and off they go away)
