Cheers Bazza !
That's much appreciated mate.

There's a bunch of old Amiga games and utills sitting in the loft at the moment,
that I'd love to get out and tinker with.

I had to admit defeat with UFO enemy unknown, I installed steam on my Win 7 partition
but......It works !! I can now play one of my most treasured games ever !

I can't wait for steam to launch on Linux.

Thanks again.

                                      Hi GJ...

I use E-UAE, WinUAE and a real A1200(HD) all set up the same...

WinUAE is undoubtably the better of the two emulators by a huge margin.

I use both in default A1200(HD) mode and develop on both and do final tests on the real thing.

WinUAE 1.5.3 has been the most stable for me although a few years old now. It is SOOOOO quick too!

E-UAE is old and only reaches version 0.8.29 it needs a little tweaking here and there to get working correctly. The Audio Filter is NOT emulated reliably as are one or two other minor facets, but has been invaluable in testing anything I do... It runs at about the same speed as an A1200(HD) with a bit of FastRam...

If you need any help just holler or PM me...

                                      Yes, It's not exactly "Ninja".......

However it has ran Visa (badly, but be fair Vista on a HPSC would still
run like a dog!)

And when I first got Win 7 on it it was pretty sweet. And like I said, I hardly use it.
It's not like it gets a lot of abuse and needs de-fragging (coz it doesn't).

I don't think the specs are the "whole" problem.
Although I'll admit they don't help.

I do a little bit of gaming on it too (don't laugh.....)
Nothing too demanding though. Stuff Like Dawn of War, the old Jedi Knight games, WOW,
SW battlefront. Stuff like that.

Hi there I'm not a zealot, but I'm fed up and needed to vent somewhere.......

Background -
I dual boot (currently) between Win 7 and Ubuntu 11.04
The point being it's the same hardware !!

/Rant mode on

OK, as you may or may not know (like a lot of us around here) I'm a MASSIVE Amiga fan.

I've been trying to set up the Amiga Forever emulator on my Win partition
(without much luck, it seemed to work better on XP and Vista (brrrr, shudder)).

But the thing is, Win takes a good 3-5 mins before the desktop is properly usable.
I only have 4 gadgets on the sidebar (clock, 2 weather items and a CPU meter).
At normal startup
(There's only few apps run at startup, and I've stopped the Java auto update,
as it was a massive resource hog, along with open office).

I've been using Win 7 for around 12-18 months and I hardly even use it.
Mostly for games and the odd piece of software. Again, the point is I don't clutter it up
with a bazillion unnecessary pieces of software, or apps.
Everything is soooo sloooooowwwwww !!! Slow to work, slow to respond. Slow to do anything !!!
It really is painful to use.

So I eventually get the emulation software installed........
Now it can't even find the ROM images to create an emulated Amiga !
They are there ! I can see them in an explorer window !
they were installed.
Gaaaarrrrggggghhhhh !

(I realise that there are a bunch of issues here, and that it's not all the OS's fault)

I then boot into Ubuntu, run Rhythmbox, Firefox (multiple tabs) a terminal session,
a firewall, Ubuntu's software center and this is running along at around 50% CPU usage.

Why? It's the same hardware !
(Again I do realise that different OS's will approach things differently
But seriously...........)

/Rant mode off

[Edit]
I've since installed UAE from the software center, copied across the ROM files from the original CD....
and guess what....? It seems I've got an emulated Amiga running.....

OK all I need to figure out now is, how to get UFO working and them I'm not
leaving the house again......

My PC system specs
CPU = AMD Athalon 3500+ (64 bit) single core
RAM = 3 GB
GFX =  GeForce 8400 GS

(Quite pedestrian by todays standards)

Sorry about this, I just really needed to blow off some steam.
