NTFS
or ext4 with Ext2Read installed on windows.

One problem is that the Windows NTFS permissions are not the same as Linux permissions. I would not recommend executing files from there, and you may have problems with backups if you want to retain file permissions.

I have a couple of new hard drives. One will be Windows 7 / Mint 13. The other one is a backup drive with storage that I need to access both OSes from.

Question: What is the best format to use on the backup to allow me to easily read / write / execute from both OSes?
