I have Freeserve broadband at home and Elite broadband at work. I can receive mail (POP3) from accounts with either ISP at either location, but when at work I have to use the Elite SMTP server to send and when at home I have to use the Freeserve one.

I have two "sending" accounts set up in Thunderbird on my laptop to cover this.

I doubt there's any ISP that allows you to use their SMTP server whilst connected via another ISP - they all blocked this off as the first step in the war against spam.

You can usually receive mail fro one ISP while connected to another, but not send. Mail servers are usually restricted to only allow mail to be sent out form their own network, otherwise they are used by spammers.

I don't know about Freeserve broadband, but when I used their, they redirected all port 25 requests to their own server, so it didn't matter what you set up as your SMTP server.

not true my friend as I said in an earlier post I use Zen as my ISP but still have some stuff coming to my Freeserve address which I have not dial in to

My friends house is on Wanadoo broadband I`m on NTL Broadband. On his machine Internet Explorer stops when reading his web mail attachments so I introduced him to the delights of Firefox. ThunderBird would`nt accept the email address he had because there was no "@" in it. But he`s happy with Firefox (now the disks been defragged and 1gb tempory files removed)

AFAIK, Freeserve/Wanadoo will only allow you to send mail if you're connected on one of their own lines. Are they your broadband provider?

A friend of mine was on Freeserve / Wanadoo web mail with an address of "HisUserName@fsmail.net". I had trouble with Thunderbird (invalid name/password pair)so I emailed myself and the address of the sender was "member@HisRealName.wanadoo.co.uk".
for example "superstud@fsmail.net" "member@johnsmith.wanadoo.co.uk"
Not been back round yet to see if it works.

I too use Zen and have freeserve address as well using Zen's SMTP so it ain't a problem, I'll let you know when it does become a problem

Same here, I'm using ZenADSL now but mum wishes to keep her old fsnet address.

Off the top of my head I can suggest trying the SMTP authenticaion methods, or use another SMTP server for sending email - like your current ISP.

silly question but are you connecting with Wanadoo BB?
I connect using a different ISP and have to use their SMTP

Hi,

I usually access my email through the web, but have just installed Thunderbird.

I can receive messages fine, but my smtp seems to be wrong.

I used to use smtp.freeserve.net on port 25.

I know that Freeserve is now Wanadoo, but my pop address is still freeserve. I looked at Wanadoo's site, and they suggested smtp.wanadoo.co.uk (this failed).

BTW, I am using broadband.

Anybody sussed this out, yet?
