i signed up with 1and1 for my ikkle linux shop, found out that it supports php but not mySQL, that kinda annoying when i wanted to make a forum so i had to sign up with someone who did both.. and i didnt want to spend extra on the business account.. other then that it seems ok

I use positive-internet, to be honest they are a bit pricey, but the only hosting company who promised not to delete any pop3 emails no matter how old they were (1+1 had something daft like 1mth, but please dont take my word on that)

Another thing I like about positive is their attitude, email them and within a couple of hours you've got a non-standard responce email, chatty, but efficient and knowledgeable.
http://www.positive-internet.com/zhosting.html

They hosted the record breaking podcast from Ricky Gervais too as mentioned on the homepage
I did have a 1&1 account a long time ago, wasn't happy. I did have a server with memset, they managed to bugger it up and charge me for the privilage so I left them and now have a server with Webfusion (PIPEX hosting) which so far I have had no problem with.

Anyway, wyliecoyote, thanks for that. I seem to have come across a few detrimental comments about 1&1 recently - which isn't terribly surprising, as they are a big company, so not *everyone's* goign to be happy. Whilst doing some dredging though I cam across unitedhosting.co.uk. They seem to be quite good, cheap and friendly. They also have an open forum which is re-assuring. I'll have a closer look and try and make up my mind...

We use I&1 for our site hosting, support is good, they offer a Linux option, and our site uses LAMP.
If you go for thr professional package, you can have as many .co.uk domains as you like, up to 100, I think.
They also offer antivirus and spam filtering on mailboxes, which so far seems to work well. We've been with them 2 or 3 years now

I'd rather go for a larger company, as I've had my fill of one-man band resellers...

Try ftp'ing to your site. Can you either see an index.html, index.php or index.htm or even (aagh) an index.asp file there? If not, can you see a directory labelled 'public_html', or 'www' or something, and if so what's inside it? If you find an index.* file there, try copying it away, then replacing it with one crafted lovingly in vi, or - given the cruel comments by others, one written in notepad...

The fact that even the cheapest includes PHP 3,4,& 5, SSI and Multi site hosting suggests that it's not just for numpties. I'd be going for something biggger anyway, 'coz I want mySQL as well...
