Fixed !
There was no auto loopback entry in /etc/network/interfaces.
I'm not 100% sure what I'm talking about but I added it and everything works.

Debian Sarge 3.1
When I run ifup, the network connection is ok.
Lynx will connect to the internet via eth0 & run without problems.

If I start an X session then kde & gnome startup both hang after a few seconds .

Icewm starts ok.

If I open a browser in icewm and click on a link I am taken to the url.
If I try to type an address, the browser freezes as soon as I touch the keyboard.

If I run ifdown at a command prompt, both kde & gnome start ok.

Can anybody give me a clue where to look to try & fix it?
