Or there's the new KDE menu system in SUSE 10.2 which is more selective. The KDE idea of putting everything in the menu can be overwhelming at times.

I've been experimenting with v3.4 in slack recently, i like it all being in /opt too ... at least the whole thing is accessible. I was aware of the 'Right click on the menu and select Menu Editor?' option but that's not quite what i was getting at. More along the lines of a db type of repository, similar as that used by some designers. A two paned gui box, one with all the available components (menu items) ... select an item and key the right arrow and it goes into the included list (on the menu), and visa-versa. I figure you knew what i meant though, i mention it anyway in case it isn't to anyone else.

That option above, will remove via a delete, but it wont restore, and the item doesn't find it self in the 'recycle bin' ... so, kaputen ..., at least in v3.4 anyway.

The 'scan for none K programs facility only covers those, not the default set as well. But at least that's getting closer.

I just installed openSuSE 10.2 to day so will have a look at what you allude to above, as i think i got a, well, a kind of a glimpse at something that might at least be relevant.

I wont go to much into what i think of it so far , but yes --- some serious configuration is in store later to night. By working it through from a mount. Typical, no boot choice, just got up and overwrites the drives boot sector, but i was ready for that and ambushed it back. Total screw on setting up the graphics, maybe it's my old card, but i don't see that as an excuse. Plus booting straight in to kdm which i completely loath.

Had to ctr-C to finalise the logout to the console as well, and there's a message sitting there ... something to do with a xen file/executable !. It would be nice if it really didn't make all these assumptions, i certainly didn't chose any configuration along those lines.

And good grief, hasn't novel got a fascinating way of interpreting the GPL ! Mot hard to see just whose team there really on there.

I see the kde part as still worth looking at though, just to see if some sought of menu item repository/db has been implemented. With out that, it can't really claim any real professionalism. Even deb has its' 'menu' package which allows for that facility, via straight forward simple text files. All the maintainer has to do is use a template and include it in the package.

v10.2 is a very argumentative distro, to be sure.

Hmm, I tend to think of 1sf as a binary blob. Not sure what this has to do with configurability, but I thought I'd mention it.
