At least raw Win9x comes with a pair of crutches (in the form of Regedit and PowerToys)

Yes... they have/had rather a stranglehold on the education market, especially in the primary sector, mostly thanks to their operating environment that sits on top of Win9x and cripples it, allegedly to make it easier to manage and more friendly to young children. As a side-effect it makes it look & feel like Windows 3.1.

It has to be the most frustrating system I've ever had to work with

RM? What's that I wondered. Then I realised that my firewall is running on an RM Multimedia PC2. So that'll be Research Machines then?

I don't think IBM are seen as an educational provider though they are coming back in that direction...

I would have though IBM would have made a more logical choice. I know there intenet divison has poorley implemented MX servers, their repetitive bounces nearly bought down a third of our MX servers.

It has been around for a long time, so people will go, should I use this that is only 2 years old, or RM which is 15/20 years old. I don't think schools see the price tag, they just shrug and accept it....

Well it went really well, there where some really good presentations. I think alot will be going up on the schoolforge-uk website, so I will get the address for that later. I don't think that there were enough schools there, but those that were there were really interested in karoshi. One guy even called out that it was fantastic from the audience!

There was noone there from RM, but I don't think that is anyones loss!!
