Conventions cost serious money to organise, I should imagine that the biscuit barrel at LXF towers would have to remain empty for quite some time to fund one.

That's the thing in the UK - they're either infrequent or invitation-only (and it's seriously annoying!).

Perhaps joining a LUG would be a good idea? They meet up and organize events - sometimes for the public. Keep an eye on your local LUG's maling list.
