Have you gone to the Puppy Linux forum for this as I am sure that there is abundant information on it covering this subject.

I myself run puppy 4.0 in a 2GB USB pen drive without any problem.

How did you burn the iso to disk? Did you do this from Windows or Linux.

Have a look at www.puppylinux.com and double check that you started off right.

Hope this assists.

Puppy is probably more prone to RAM issues, because it loads itself completely into RAM, if there is enough.
I think serial detect is for modems and USB too.
I would try some of the options on the boot screen.
IIRC, you can enter something like

puppy pfix=noram

to stop it copying itself into ram. If that works, your RAM is at fault.

edit:just checked that, (posting this from puppy).
Do you have USB keyboard and mouse?

OK, a bit of Googling does seem that RAM errors are common with Puppy I've actually tried a couple of different versions on Puppy on an old IBM Thinkpad 600 and it failed at different stages of the initial hardware detection. IIRC the "puppyserialdetect" is looking for any serial devices and any PS/2 devices (mouse + keyboard). It does seem that Puppy has got some problems at the moment.

The Puppy Community Forums seem particularly strong and maybe you can get more specific help there.

I burnt the iso immage of puppy on both cd and dvd
it boots but freezes on puppyserialdetect is running.
I have to switch off to get out.
Now cannot get anything at all, other than the motherboard logo.
Ubuntu.
got my eeepc. lucky.
Lastime this happened my husband moved the ram over.and it worked.
Got more ramm on order.
But Why. the messages that come up when it boots is too quick for me to read to see if I should be doing anything else. then lots of stuff that says done then sticks on the last one puppyserialdetect is running.
