I have several systems running Ubunutu 10.04 which is supported until 2013.
The desktop layout is the same on all systems.
I've tried Ubuntu 11.10 in a virtualbox and dislike.
Layout of all systems:
1 panel at the top.
Menu [Icon only]
dockbarx
Window Title for Gnome Panel 0.2.10
Notification Area 2.30.2 [Volume/Internet]
Clock
Window Buttons 0.2.10
I've used the unity interface and classic [fallback mode]
My desktop:

Any help would be appreciated!

I'm in exactly the same position.
Have been fooling around with 11.10 in a VM for a while, looks like the solution for me will be a switch to Xfce. |

I am using a test installation of 12.04 with the classic gnome desktop, and by using info at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1966370 I have got my box looking just about identical to my main 10.04 installation.
I only use a single panel, like the linked posts author, and have always run my gnome like that, having started my Linux days using KDE. Gnome ran much faster on my box, so I tweaked it to look as I want, and I can still do so.
Try it out. It certainly works well as far as I can see, and I am hard pushed sometimes to realise that I am running 12.04 instead of 10.04, as they do now look the same. _________________ Ubuntu 10.04 user, and loving it! |

Using Gnome Classic/Fallback
Can anyone help or recommend an icon only task-manager that will go in the panel? (don't want or need docks)
Still looking... _________________ Ubuntu 10.04.4 LTS! |

Not even sure if it's available in 12.04, but in 10.04 there is a Window Selector applet for the panel. It puts one icon on the panel which when clicked shows an icon for each application window which is open on the computer. _________________ Ubuntu 10.04 user, and loving it! |

It's available in 12.04 Gnome Classic (no effects) which I have settled on for now.
I read somewhere that Gnome Classic will be discontinued, so it could still be Xfce for me in years to come. |
