First, say what distro you're talking about.
Second, are you sure it's codecs you want - usually you go to the manufacturers page for drivers, but to other sources for codecs (depends what exactly you want to decode).
If it's Linux of some sort (I presume it is), then drivers will normally get supplied on load.
Codecs can be got either by consulting the repositories or by downloading a complete player package.

Chipset on that mobo is a Cmedia 9761A.
Should be supported by almost any distro.

Thanks to both prompt repliers.

The supplier or the Mother-board produced seems to offer a choice of Windows downloads as if they were the only chips in the shop.

I have had this problem with most of the cover discs I have used. This one is the Ubuntu 10.10 and upgraded from Ubuntu website yesterday. If they have sound drivers, how do I access them?

I thought the driver was a Realtek AC97 codec so I went and got that just now. Not sure I have installed it right. But I will get the other one if possible.

I had the impression CAudio was a M$ thing. I always ended up with RealTek player when I had to get drivers for XP in times past. C Audio always seemed to bork it.

Anyone know the best sound card to get for Linux distros?
One with a CD or whatever that has an alternative to M$fud

edit:

That seems to haver caught it.

What are the default settings on audio devices on your discs and how do I get around in them?

Drivers in Linux are part of the kernel and choosing which one to use is usually done by the hardware detection routines that are part of the installer and the normal start up scripts that will detect new hardware.

Is your problem solved or not; I can not tell from your last post.

If not try using
Code:
alsamixer
in terminal and check that the levels of outputs are not set too low.

Move from slider to slider, and raise and lower levels with the cursor keys;
Mute and unmute with the "M" key.
Tab will move you from "playback" to "capture".
Esc will save and exit.

I was too embarrased to reply but |I have got over it now.

The sound was set to mute on the pull down preference. I don't know how that happened but it sometimes goes like that on the sound control on You Tube videos too.

I don't know what of all the choices I should make about the hardware settings too neither.

I have a couple of speakers with a bass woofer whatsit and a pair of ear muff/mic thingumies that don't record very well.

I'm not at all delighted with things but they are working~ish, so far.

I'm going to try the codec suggested and thern the last bit of advice. Thanks all.

So I won't be using that. Though I should get a bios flash I suppose.
