Not sure if this is the right place or if it should be under hardware.

I have just put together a new computer with a Gigabyte GA Z77-D3H motherboard, i5-3570K cpu and 8gig ram.

When I installed windows I had to install additional software to use all the facilities of the chipset i.e usb3, the graphics capability of the cpu etc.

If I install Linux Mint 12 for example do I have to get additional software for the chipset. On the gigabyte website it says get drivers from chipset manufacturers, but there is nothing on the Intel site.

All the drivers you need are already installed with your Linux kernel.

That's what I thought.

But I have my stupid hat on today after trying to type the password on the new computer and wondering why it won't work then realizing I am using the keyboard attached to one of my other computers.

I have been trying to install various distros on this new machine but can't get the display to work using the inbuilt graphics.

I will try using an old graphics card I have lying around but would prefer not to have to.

Has anyone got a distro to work on an Ivy bridge chip?

I tried several distros and got a couple to work Chakra 2011.12 and Ubuntu 12.04 both 64bit versions.

I am generally not a fan of Ubuntu but on this time hats off to them for something that worked right first time. Charkra was good but the package management system had problems.

Some 32bit distros worked but I wanted to have 64bit, could I have installed a 32bit distro and "upgraded" it to 64bit?

No. If you want 64 bit, you'd need to install it straight away. There's no "upgrade" path from 32 to 64 bit... Exclamation
