Ok, I don't know exactly the technical terms for my question. I am running Ubuntu 12.04 and when I start my PC, sometimes my desktop comes up differently. I started with a starter disk from the magazine that had Ubuntu 11.1 and gnome shell.
Mostly it comes up with a "Applications" and a "places" menu at the top and nothing else, also this has a line at the bottom for workspaces, whatever that means - it just shows a block or two blocks or whatever. Sometimes it comes up with a top line "Activities" menu, the date/time in the middle, and some icons for things like volume, battery life, wireless reception strength, etc.
I like the second desktop better and was wondering if there is a way to lock it in so that the desktop always starts the same?
I am just learning Linux and am having trouble finding any good reference material for this stuff that is consolidated in one place. _________________ Mandelbrot

The second one you describe is what should appear for the Gnome3 desktop, I'm not sure why it doesn't appear all the time but it is also borked on my install
Time to get out the hammer and bash the box into shape _________________ still looking for that door into summer |
