I'm slightly amazed that the release of the 'buntus 12.10 seems to have gone by unmentioned, until now.
I'm giving Xubuntu 12.10 a whirl on a NetBook at the moment. It seems somewhat better than the previous release, the default theme being somewhat less gloomy and starting up XFCE's terminal doesn't create a zombie process.

I have tried to install Xubuntu on a variety of devices over the years, but the install has always failed. I have no problem installing another *buntu and then the XFCE desktop though... Confused

I just switched from Ubuntu 10.4 to Xubuntu 12.10. I notice that even though my bash files (script.sh) are executable that clicking on them has no effect. I have to use the command line to run the script: ./script.sh

How do I make the bash (.sh) files clickable in Xubuntu 12.10?

Using Kubuntu 12.10 and it's really bloody excellent. There seems to be some negative feelings about the Unity version, but KDE is trouble free for me.

I just bought a bottom end laptop (£320) Toshiba C850-172, for a host of many reasons. Partly because I wanted to stream music and radio from the house to my garden and garage and "ave it large" using a Jawbone Jambox via bluetooth.

Was originally looking at the Lenovo E335 because it was small, light and had a 8 hour battery life. But the price went from £400 to £460 in the last week, so figured sod it, got the larger, heavier, more power hungry Tosh. Put £60 of the £140 saving towards a 64GB OCZ Vertex 4 SSD to replace the Tosh's 5,400rpm HD. Thought about spending £30 on getting the RAM from 4GB to 8GB, but given I was trying to maximise battery life and can't see using 4GB for what is essentially a portable RDP device to my desktop, didn't bother.

Looked at tablets and small 13-14" laptops. Really liked the look of the Asus TF700T!!! But including docking station, about £600. So I figured I'd sacrifice a bit of portability for a bit more "jack of all".

Again with the OT waffle.

In short, I will _hopefully_ be installing Ubuntu 12.10 onto this laptop if i arrives this week.
The desktop will remain 12.04.1 as will the Mythbuntu DVR, hopefully it all plays nice.

EDIT:
mmm, as a side note. I see Canonical dropped the "Alternate" ISO from the 12.10 lineup. I always install from the Alternate image, so will have to hope the Desktop works on all PC's thrown at it.... Rolling Eyes
