Hi guys and gals...
I would like another piece of info from all who wish to participate...
1) From your Linux desktop open up a terminal of your choice.
2) Shift this default terminal window to as close to the upper left hand corner as it will go on your desktop.
3) From the prompt type:
****$ printf "\x1B[8;200;300t"<CR>
4) Also type:-
****$ stty size<CR>
And let me have your two values...
5) Close down your terminal...
On this MBP they are 46 and 179.
TIA... _________________ 73...

and yes it is a huge terminal that's gone beyond the bounds of the screen. _________________ I have been touched by his noodly appendage. |

Hi guys...
Thanks for trying...
You guys who take the plunge to do little snippets like this for me are effectively doing beta testing for my projects.
I find out lots about different shells and never take anything for granted.
1) purplepenguine: your values were what I expected...
2) guy: I am assuming you're running something like a netbook?
3) MBF: Yours has told me NOT to use the Esc sequence to maximise so everything now centres around the standard 80 x 24 or 80 x 25 sizes... I will probably use it just to get one extra line to 80 x 25...
Thanks guys... _________________ 73...

Using Konsole here, the window size did not change but the contents scrolled up several pages leaving me with a blank prompt. The output was 200 300. I needed reset to make the terminal usable again. _________________ "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." (Albert Einstein) |

Using Konsole on Mepis, almost same as Nelz got. After the first command, the cursor ended up several blank screens below the prompt, indented as if the prompt was there but invisible. Anything I typed was echoed back at the prompt (if I scrolled back to check) but the focus would fly back to the cursor position, which moved as you typed but its area remained blank. The window did not change size or anything.
The output was :- 300 200 (NOT 200 300). _________________ Unsolved Mysteries of the Universe No 9 :-

Hi RW, JH, nelz and Nuke...
I was aware of any pitfalls but did not expect so many from I think seven replies. Looks like my project will have to stay inside a standard 80 x 24 window...
Thanks to all for taking part and doing _risky_ things for me but I never assume that anything is universal and this little snippet is not...
Once again all thanks and this thread can now be closed... _________________ 73...

Nope. Just an ancient LCD monitor I bought years ago - shop-soiled packaging but high quality Dell model of the day: 1024 x 768 or not much better, I can't recall exactly. The PC is a bit newer - a basic homebuild, nothing special. The sort of cheapskate system that only Linux can breathe life into in today's world. _________________ Cheers,

For what its worth my figures are
55 206
But was not quite max size, maxing it I got size of 55 207
Now if I dragged the terminal off the left hand a touch I got a huge terminal of 200 * 300 _________________
