Calender in 12.04

As far as I can see there is no built in facility for auto. indicating the date on the screen top bar. The time comes up, of course, but only by clicking on the time can one ascertaining the date. As one who is rapidly approaching geriatric senility I find this a bit of a chore (I'm lazy sod too!).
A poke about on the 'net seems to indicate that this is due to something to do with Evolution.
Can anyone shed some light please?
Oh, sod it.
