I doubt that a proposal in a pie shop in Wigan is newsworthy, not even a wedding in a pie shop for that matter.

Speak for yourself.

"PIES, BIRTHS, DEATHS AND MARRIAGES (Est. 1847).
"Christenings and baptisms by arrangement (curry sauce extra)."

Only in Wigan.

Wigan: Greater Manchester (formerly Lancashire)
St. Helens: Merseyside (formerly Lancashire)
Leeds: Yorkshire (fought wars against Lancashire)
Rugby: (Warwickshire, whose Earl used to side with Yorkshire)

Michael Gove will have your (grand?)children learning all that by heart.

When I was in school, the teachers used to beat us over the head.

I'm not surprised the nuns were after you if you indulged in that sort of behaviour at school!
