MATE on debian testing (jesse)

Postby guy » Mon Nov 04, 2013 1:24 pm

MATE has now appeared in the repos for Debian Testing (aka "Jessie"):
http://packages.debian.org/jessie/mate-common

There is enough information out there on installing it, but having done that how do I change my default desktop from the unusable Gnome3 to MATE? Or, will it just happen?
Cheers,

After installing Mate (or any other desktop), reboot. When you get to the login screen you can choose which desktop you want to launch. There will be a couple of icons or menu buttons apart from the main login dialog; one of them allows you to choose the desktop. After selecting this you can log in.

The next time you boot, the desktop you chose will be the default.

Many thanks. It's always the "everybody knows that" things that are hardest to find explanations for.

Good luck with MATE. It is terrific, in my opinion, and I am glad it is spreading to more distros now. A real triumph of substance over style!
