In lieu of outsourced e-mail, I'd like to use the ISP to download the remote mail files
(encrypted connection) for lan storage and have lan users check locally.

I'm trying to avoid a full blown;
Postfix, Dovecot, Amavis, ClamAV, and Spamassassin,
iredmail setup if possible.

- Fetch remote mail for local centralized storage
- Lan users recieve mail (thunderbird clients) from local
- Use the remote server for sending.

Could someone please provide a link for acomplishing this?

System: Debian 64 testing.

Thank you.
Serene

There aren't many options left if you rule out those applications... However, I suspect you did that because you don't fancy configuring them by hand. If so, try Webmin. It'll allow you to remotely administer the machine but also reduces the chances of syntax errors in configuring the tools.

http://www.webmin.com/

Chances are it's in the Debian repo's somewhere, if not, just follow the install instructions from the Webmin pages. Smile

Thanks Dutch_Master.

You are right. I suspect there is a more simple method available than a full blown e-mail lan server to acomplish my objectives... isn't there another way ?

Cheers,
Serene

At the very least you need fetchmail or getmail to pull the mail off the ISP's server and and IMAP server like Dovecot to serve it to your users. You'll probably also need an MDA like procmail to sort the mail into user's folders (although this can be gone by running separate instances of getmail for each user).

I wrote a tutorial on a setup just like this in LXF 115.

Hi Nelz.

I've revised my question after much reading.

Objective:
1. Fetchmail to gather remote mail either from ISP or gmail, etc.
2. Postfix to process fetched mail from outside, send/receive mail to the outside world/LAN.
3. Use imap/dovecot for LAN users, leaving mail centralized on the LAN server.

Question: I like RoundCube webmail, can I incorporate into the above setup without
sacrificing any existing features/configurations from the above setup?

Cheers.

Yes, that was covered later in the series, in issue 120.
