That's the question we should all be asking our corporate decision-makers when they next come to upgrade their OS.
ISO 23360 is the brand new international standard for the Linux Standards base (LSB), as reported here.
But we don't need to tell the boss that, do we? _________________ Cheers,

An even bigger question is, how many distros conform to it? And how many will in two years? The LSB has been around for ages, and we still have binary compatibility problems, so it remains to be seen how effective it'll be...

The same problem exists with the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard - until all Linux distros comply with both standards we will always have compatibility issues. This is really basic stuff that would make all users and developers life much easier.
Just think UTOPIA - you can find all configuration files in one place, link to libraries in one place, binaries and system binaries all in one place, user binaries in one location, documentation all together in one usable format, ...

Unfortunatly.. the Utopia you speek of with everyone following a standard.
Is goin aginst freedom, the freedom to chose, to have an opinion.
The reason to all the non standards is that people have an opinion that it is best to do it ther way.
