I don't know of any DIY laptop hardware - the cases and motherboards are all pretty specialist and specific to the manufacturer. The only common things between most laptops are the memory, processor and harddrive. Everything else has to be made and/or bought to spec.

What sort of laptop do you want? One that's small and light with good battery life. A "desktop replacement" laptop? What do you want to use if for? Where do you want to use it? Choosing a laptop is so much more involved that a desktop. Building your own just adds to the choices.

If you want to be able to upgrade the CPU, choose a motherboard that lets you do so. This question is best directed at the suppliers of the various motherboards you are interested in.

Probably best to check Linux On Laptops for advice on which works best for you. For what it's worth I use an Averatec 6220 with 512Mb RAM, AMD Sempron 2400+ and 60Gb HDD. It's fine for what I want to do on it (coding Java, vector graphics, html etc) but if you want to play games it would be *very* poor. I get about 2 hours out of it and it's 2.68Kg, and 2.5 cms thick, so that gives some idea of dimensions and weight. I run Ubuntu on it, and everything worked straight out of the box, even wireless networking. Hope this helps

Oh yes, forgot - the bottom panel has various little panels that you undo to upgrade memory, CPU and hard drive (and wireless card, should you wish to). Very handy.

Perhaps this is where you got the idea, but check out the September Issue of "cpu computer power user." The cover is "Build Your Own Notebook PC." Beyond that, all I'd say is check every peripheral against the Linux compatability tables. Smile
