I presume this is bad, it happens with most discs, not all, but most of them. Just when trying to read the drive:
hdd: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdd: command error: error=0x54 { AbortedCommand LastFailedSense=0x05 }
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector 148
hdd: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdd: command error: error=0x54 { AbortedCommand LastFailedSense=0x05 }
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector 152
hdd: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdd: command error: error=0x54 { AbortedCommand LastFailedSense=0x05 }
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector 156
hdd: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdd: command error: error=0x54 { AbortedCommand LastFailedSense=0x05 }
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
end_request: I/O error, dev hdd, sector 160
hdd: command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hdd: command error: error=0x54 { AbortedCommand LastFailedSense=0x05 }
ide: failed opcode was: unknown
Its annoying as I've only 1 dvd drive, so I tried using hdparm -d 0 /dev/hdd
And it worked!
I can now read media again, but its slooooow. Will it last not using dma for a while, or hours? Any guesses as to what might have happened?
(its knackered )
I didn't even use it that much re: burning stuff, I guess they are pretty cheap now though. |

I wouldn't be surprised if it's on its way out. I have had a couple of duff ones, failing not long after the warranty expired, indeed with similar messages to those you give above.
So far my LITE-ON DVDRW SOHW-1673S seems to be working pretty well though, fingers-crossed. _________________ Bye, Rhakios |

Yea my LITE-ON is doing fairly well, touch wood, have you noticed how its nearly always exactly a month after the warranty expires? _________________ Need a New Signature |

My first DVDRW drive, costing nearly £400, expired some 363 days before the warranty ran out, but only one day before a deadline _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |

I had a CDRW die the day after the warranty expired, the company would not do anything about it, I guess they were within their rights, but its pretty bad customer service in my eyes _________________ Need a New Signature |

I've had the drive (GSA-4081B) since March 2004 (when I put together this 64 box), which surprised me a little, cost £70. I've just bought a new NEC drive (ND-4550), one with the lightscribe thingy, whatever the new version of that is called, cant remember.
I didn't buy it for that reason, I got it because its silver, supports DVDRAM and got good media compatability reviews etc etc cost me £23!
LiteON are pretty good, ALL of my LiteON drives from the last 4-5 years are still working fine (12x CDRW etc)
I still think a simple electronics product like this should survive more than 2 years, especially as its only burnt 30-40 DVD's in that time. Oh well, the new drive was only £23 and is faster. _________________ I think, therefore I compile |

My first CDRW/DVD combo (Ricoh, £115) lasted 5 years, My first DVDRW(Liteon, £45) lasted 2 before it started giving errors on anything but CDs .
Now I've got a Sony, cost £35 or so, works fine, 3 months old.
Shortest lived DVDRW, Sony, can't remember the price, killed by an exploding WindowsXP Pro install disc in a workstation build at work, 2 weeks old! _________________ The sig between the asterisks is so cool that only REALLY COOL people can even see it!
