I'm fed up with Mandrake 10 Community edition off the LXF DVD and the way it handles USB devices.
I have two SCSI drives (sda and sdb) and whenever I want to attach and explore a USB stick or card reader after booting it never mounts them. I know they are sdc or sdd but all attempts at mounting fail. Sometimes doing a hardware scan and then the mount command does work but they mount root only.
If I leave them attached and reboot it mounts them fine but then shuffles my SCSI drives down the chain so my /mnt is all over the place and files won't load from histories/last used files in OOo etc
I'm minded to switch to SUSE 9.2 but thought I would check with you lot first whether this did the same or handled things better/properly
The annoying thing is that Win98 has no problem even when I hotplug them so I end up using it to access my photos and other files
Please help me do this easily in Linux. I'm getting really annoyed

Mandrake 10.0 uses devfs, which wil do this device name shuffling. Switch to 10.2, which uses udev instead, and you can name your devicesas you wish. The hotplug system has also improved a fair bit in the last year. _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |

Switched to SuSE 9.2 from LXF DVD 64 and things seem to be much better.
Whether I boot with a USB device attached or plug it in later it always mounts it in the same place and does not muck about with my hard drives

Mandrake 10.1 would probably have done he same. It's not the name of the distro that matters here, but its age. _________________ Unix is user-friendly. It's just very selective about who it's friends are. |
