I have 3 machines connected on my network :
LinBox - running ML10.0
WinBox - running Win2k
WebBox - running ML9.1 as internal web server.
Network works between LinBox and WinBox.
I can ping both LinBox from WinBox, and WinBox from Linbox. I can ping LinBox and WinBox from WebBox. I cannot ping to WebBox from either of the others.
I can open the default web page on WebBox (running Apache) on http://192.168.0.3:80.
Using LinNeighborhood I can see LInBox and WinBox on all three machines but not WebBox (they are all in the same workgroup INTEGRANE)
The network seems to be working only partially.
Can anyone suggest anything?
Regards and TIA,
Mike |

From your description, the only thing that works is when you use WebBox's IP address instead of its name. In which case, you probably need to add WebBox to the hosts file on the other two boxes. it's /etc/hosts on Linux. I can't remember the location on Windows, probably in the same directory that everything else is dumped in _________________ Unix is user-friendly. I'm guessing that you have the SAMBA client installed on WebBox (hence you can see the other two machines), but not the SAMBA server (so they cannot see WebBox).
Check your distro documentation to see if there's an easy way to set this up. _________________ Hope this helps,

The hosts file is in c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc on Windows XP, c:\WinNT\System32\drivers\etc on NT & 2000. For Win9x I seem to remember it's in c:\Windows _________________ Hope this helps,

Thanks guys,
I have updated all the /etc/hosts files to include the three IP addresses.
I checked on WebBox and smbd and nmbd weren't running so I started them and can now see WebBox with Samba, all the shares are visible but if I try to mount them on LinBox eg to /home/mike/mnt/WebPublic I get an error message - "SMB connection failed. 3091 tree connect failed - ERRDOS -ERRnosuchshare". Also I still cannot ping 192.168.0.3 (WebBox).
Cheers,
Mike |

Looks like you need to do the samba configuration on the webbox now to allow access to the files.
What is the reported failure when you try to ping webbox - it may have a firewall blocking pings, but open to browsing. _________________ Derek |
