Except of course that Walsall is defined in my Dictionary of English Place-Names thus:

Walsall W. Mids. Waleshale 1163. 'Nook
of land or valley of a man called Walh'.
OE pers. name + halh. Alternatively
the first element could be OE walh
'Welshman'.

I thought maybe you'd meant that. And I seemed to have read a comma between "French" and "Basque", which I now see isn't there. Must have been the spots in front of my eyes from standing in the sun too long. Smile

Yes, and as a welsh speaker, I can say it's very confusing to listed to, as you keep noticing words you recognise, but don't quite understand the sentence as a whole.

Welsh has evolved a lot since it and Breton were "compatible", due to the larger number of people who talked welsh over the centuries.
