Hiyall, just got back from the 14ieme festival de Cerf-Volants in Dieppe, France,
(The 14th Biannual Kite festival for those of you who don't speak French).
Walking on the beach , turned around and saw a 50ft penguin following me!

Just erasing part of another giant kite, shaped like a fish.
The festival was a amazing, hundreds, if not thousands of Kites from 6 inches accross to enormous, stunt kites, traction kites, fighting kites, aerial ballet, stacks of up to 300 kites, teams from 37 countries.
Oh and great food, drink and entertainment for a whole week, and no entrance fees!

Kites are great ....
bubble plastic, 1/4 inch dowl, gaff tape, and light fome, shaped for lift ...
Had one up on 900 meters on 3lb fishing line a few years ago ... A big long 2/3rd ark, then straight up. Had to carry a pair of binoculars to see it.
A hassel to real in though, took over an hour (grin)
Funny how people like to just stand and look up (grin)
edit:
plus thin strips of bamboo

A likely story! It was a UFO wasn't it: you're just a government stooge trying to cover things up!

My daughter made one from the tissue wrapping from a baguette, small strips of wood off a cheese box, masking tape and cotton, it was a bout 3 inches across, shaped like a butterfly.
A dutch guy saw it and gave her some carbon fibre filaments to replace the wood. She also made a small tux kite for me _________________ The sig between the asterisks is so cool that only REALLY COOL people can even see it!

Howdy,

Wow
Thats radical
It can be so much fun ...
I found the 'bubble plastic' (packaging etc) very suitable. It had body to keep shape, and was very light. I used the 2/3's rule for the cross bar. Approx 2/3's up and a bit more to suit what i had seen on others. The trick was to get that cross frame to balance. So i had it on a table and rolled the main long axis untill i got a good stable balance with the cross bar. Then bits of gaff tape to tune it after the covering was on. Finding some very light, spungy, packaging material made the whole difference. I stuck it to the top triangle edge of the main covering. When some bubble plastic was applied over that and streached down about half way, it formed a aerofoil/wing type shape. Bamboo slates from one of those Indian type blinds gave good stiffness. Just taped directly on the bottom side longitudinally. The weight of the fishing line made a big diff as well. I was suppried at how much drag it created.
A total hoot (grin). I'm all kited out though currently. Maybe in another ten years.

It did fly pretty well, actually, the whole thing weighed less than 20 grammes.(even less when she replaced the split wood with carbon fibre)
