Radeon 7000

Postby palepaul5 » Wed Jun 15, 2005 12:15 pm

Hi Nelz,
I remember in one of the past issues of LXF, someone wrote there was a Precision 530 with Radeon 7000 at 'LXF Towers'. My question is, if it is still there have you been able to get Mesa working properly on it. Ever since the fork in X I have been totally unable to get any proper 3d performance from it at all. I currently use the same set-up but no matter what I try I either get a complete lock-up or no performance at all. Any help on this matter would be gratefully received.

I had to disable the 3D acceleration to get my Mandriva 2005 LE installation to stop freezing up on me.

Dragging the post kicking screaming back on thread...

From what I gather, ATi Radeon, prior to the 8500 series are pretty hit and miss. They are supposed to be fairly fully supported in XFree86 from (IIRC) 4.1.0 onwards, with only a few bugs to do with dual heads, but hardware acceleration should be supported without problems. X.org, though still doesn't seem to support HW acceleration yet, but according to LXF 68, in the big article about X, it seems a major rewrite is coming and things like HW accelration, direct rendering, and other groovey terms I don't quite understand, will be supported, and much better.

I have an ATi Radeon 7500 64 MB card. Reading the man page for it and XFRee86 4.3.0, it should have HW acceleration up and running with just the lines:

Load "dri"
Load "glx"
to the Module section, and

Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection
to the end of XF86Config.

But, I tried to run one game (Boson) which complained that direct rendering wasn't enabled, and the game would run quite slow. 'Run' wasn't the word. A deathly crawl was more the result.

I don't know how to test to see if DRI is enabled without running something like a game that looks for it. Any ideas?

Thanks, I have also just found this HOWTO: http://bluszcz.jabberpl.org/radeon_dri_howto.txt , but I haven't had time to try it out yet.

I actually put MDK 10.1 back on to my box, and the card works a dream again - It must be the jump from 6.7 to 6.8 with Xorg that caused the problem(obviously...doh) I'm going to have a right good dig about between the two to see what seems to have broke. If I have any joy, I will post for others.

Aha! X.org does not currently support hardware acceleration for a lot of cards, ATi Radeons often being the prime example.
