I have just started to build applications from the source. All seems ok using the 3 steps of ./configure, make, make install.

After the make install should the app be in /usr/bin or is this dependant on params past to it ? as the new app seems to be in /bin of the new app source directory tree, i though it should have been moved to /usr/bin ?

For example building a newer version of autoMake the new version does not get moved to usr/bin

Default is usually /usr/local/bin for most apps. If you want to set it differently you should do it in the ./configure stage. A typical setup is:
Code:

./configure --prefix=/usr --localstatedir=/var --sysconfdir=/etc

./configure --help should give you a full list of options to use
