has anyone got the ipod to work with linux very easly?

My daughters iPod Mini was detected straight away with Suse 9.2 and gtkPod under the Utilities => Sync menu and I believe that Suse 9.3 is even better with the iPod. Can't tell you much more - she caught me with it and took it off me, something about not trusting me with losing all of her music again Embarassed

cool it does but ive got a bug.
Ive got to turn the pc off to unmount it. (blooming mandriva.)

Can't you umount as root? i.e. su -c "umount /mnt/ipod (or whatever it's called)"

no i keep getting unmount doesnt exist
WTF thats 3 command mandriva doesn't have modprobe being another.

doh thats dislexyia appearing againg. i found umount where it should be but im missing gtkpods shutdown scripts.

thaks for the clues. it does exist but it means ive got to do /sbin/modprobe, how do i alter that to just modprobe?

do the following:
export PATH=$PATH:/sbin

you can then just run modprobe without doing /sbin first

Of course, there is another way to do it without adding /sbin to your path. If you do:

su - -c modprobe

the extra dash gives you root's path. It isn't the same on all systems, on my SUSE box I do not have /sbin in my path, but I get routes default path when I su a command. I expect it might be in /etc/bash.bashrc somewhere. One thing that SUSE does do, if you issue unmount by mistake, it tells you there is no such command and to try umount Smile

this has been re opened because of more problems.
Im getting this message -
'/mnt/ipod/iPod_Control/iTunes/iTunesDB' does not exist. Import aborted.
Im still getting the Dnot disconnect mesage but the ipods not even mounted?
I need megger help but i cant find contact details to speak to the auther !! Crying or Very sad

I just got a shiny new mini ipod and apt'd gtkPod only to get the same message as you.

I looked up a manual howto for slackware (i use ubuntu) and it gave me a clue about the cause.

If your iPod is not automatically mounted then this might help..

Otherwise if it is and then you get that message when trying to read the iPod in gtkPod then have a look in the folder where things get mounted... on your looks like /mnt, on mine it is /media

My system mounted the iPod as its name (CHEWN THIEF), not as iPod..

SO now in gtkPod you can go to Edit->Edit preferences
then under the first tab i changed the ipod mount point to
/media/CHEWN THIEF
(and it accepted the white spaces)...

Then it worked .. although there is a warning about extended information, but the files appear and i write back to it aswell.

Hope this helps... (although it would have been nice to find some documentation that said this, instead of just listing all the benefits of the program).
